Specialising in Decontamination & Sterilisation of medical devices and surgical instruments the Sterile Services team plays an important role in the health and well-being of our patients.
As an Assistant Coordinator you will support the smooth day to day running of the department, ensuring that high quality standards are met and strict procedures are followed. This includes
- The day to day supervision of the Sterile Services Technicians
- Assisting with the assessment / prioritisation and management of the work flow within the department
- Assisting with troubleshooting / problem solving and issues with equipment / surgical instruments
Main duties of the job
You will also be responsible for:
- Ensuring that the required standards of production, cleanliness and quality control are followed to ensure that quality accreditation standards are maintained.
- the day to day supervision of the Technicians, including the allocation and checking of work, providing appropriate training and assisting with the assessment of competency
- Assisting with the daily testing of equipment and ensuring that associated auditable documentation is completed.
You must have a qualification in Decontaminating Medical Devices or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience, have a thorough knowledge of surgical instruments, be competent in the use of Microsoft office and experience of using an instrument tracking systems.
The department operates 24/7, 365 days a year, therefore you must be able and willing to work all shifts; 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm and 10pm-6am. Flexibility to work any shift on any day is essential. This includes weekends and bank holidays. Full and part time hours considered
Working for our organisation
Our Sterile Services Department cleans, disinfects, packs and sterilises over 300,000 reusable surgical instruments per month for over 70 operating theatres, plus other clinical areas throughout the Trust. We also provide services to health centres and other external customers. The department is one of the biggest and busiest in the country and is operational 24/7. The department is based at the QMC Campus, with a receipt and distribution centre servicing City Hospital Campus.
You would be joining a large well established technical team of around 70 technicians and 6 coordinators, with an opportunity for professional / career development within the NHS.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Deliver an exemplary customer experience by providing a professional, efficient, proactive, and patient-focused service to theatre staff and other clients whilst working as part of the Sterile Services team.
- Ensure that the required standards of production, cleanliness and quality control are followed to ensure that quality accreditation standards are maintained.
- To support the implementation of policies, procedures and protocols through coaching and training to maintain accreditation to ISO 13485:2016.
- Responsible for the day to day supervision of the Sterile Services Technicians, including the allocation and checking of work, providing appropriate training, and assisting with the assessment of competency.
- To develop and maintain effective channels of communication with internal and external service users, other departments and staff within the department.
- To assist with the coordination of the daily testing of equipment and ensuring that associated auditable documentation is completed.
- Highlight areas of concern or opportunities for service improvement to management and assist with implementation of any changes as necessary. Actively encourage other team members to contribute towards improvement ideas for the department.
Person specification
Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- City and Guild Level 3 in Decontaminating Medical Devices or demonstrate an equivalent level of experience in a decontamination area / Sterile Services
Desirable criteria
- ECDL or other IT qualification

- Thorough knowledge of surgical instrumentation for a wide range of specialities
- Competent in the use of Microsoft office.
- Experience of using databases
- Comprehensive experience of using instrument tracking and traceability systems to set up and maintain speciality specific instrument requirements
- Thorough knowledge of sterile services equipment and processes.
- Experience of working in a customer service environment
- Experience of training and mentoring other staff

- Experience of generating reports.
- Knowledge and understanding of standards and legislation regarding instrument manufacture and processing
